What really drives MRI pricing comes down to three key factors: magnet strength, imaging capabilities, and efficiency. Once you understand how those pieces affect cost, it becomes a lot easier to choose the right system (and avoid paying for features you won’t use).

Let’s break down what matters most:


1. Magnet Strength: The Foundation of Performance and Price

The magnet is the heart of the MRI system—and also the biggest cost driver.

1.5 Tesla (T):

  • Most common field strength for general imaging

  • Great balance between image quality and affordability

  • Refurbished 1.5T systems start around $200K–$400K

3.0 Tesla (T):

  • Delivers higher-resolution imaging, faster scan times

  • Often required for neuro, cardiac, and research-grade studies

  • Refurbished 3.0T systems start around $400K+

💡 PrizMED Tip: We often find that a well-configured 1.5T is more than enough for most outpatient centers. Don’t assume you need 3.0T unless your caseload demands it.


2. Imaging Capabilities: Software, Gradients & Channels

Beyond magnet strength, image quality and system flexibility come from gradients, coil channels, and software.

High Gradient Power & Slew Rate:
 These control how fast and accurately the machine can shift magnetic fields, directly affecting scan speed and image clarity.

Channel Count:
More channels = better signal, faster scans, and support for advanced coils.

  • Entry systems: 8–16 channels

  • Mid-range: 16–32

  • Premium: 32+ channels

Advanced Software Packages:
 Systems with cardiac, neuro, spectroscopy, or fMRI capabilities come at a premium, but they unlock serious diagnostic power.
